[And that total brat will in fact give Guts a run for his money.

The first two laps are like a warm up to Fubuki, more a test of endurance than actual speed, but they remain neck-in-neck the whole way around. That's when it becomes clear he'll need to give it his all in the final stretch if he wants to stand a chance, and so he doesn't hold back.

There's a moment when, under his breath, he mumbles something to himself and seems to reach for something around his throat that isn't there, and then that soft smile becomes a wolf's grin. He takes off like a shot in the dark, sneakers pounding the track like this is the last time he'll ever run and his life is on the line. He pushes with everything he has...and Guts pushes back.

By the time they tear across the finish line, Fubuki is skidding a few feet ahead from his momentum, very nearly tumbling and gasping heavily for being so out of breath. And while Guts rambles off at him, it's all he can do not to kick at the ground under his feet or shout his disappointment.

A tie... It was a tie of all damn things! It might have been his best time yet against Guts, but it still wasn't enough. He hadn't beat him...]

The hell if I know! The only thing I was looking at was the finish line!

[As if he'd stare at someone else's back. That's not his goal! ...not his only goal, anyway.

Jeez...

But he can't deny that it was a really good race. He hasn't felt his lungs burn this pleasantly in a while. So after a few more moments of being salty, he sucks it up and approaches Guts, hands on his hips, a strange gold sheen to his eyes. Probably just be the lighting, right?]

I think we crossed at the same time, but it doesn't matter. A promise is a promise. Captain.
